My husband has no problem with wearing a baby carrier (with one of our babies in it of course) in public. He prefers type with the baby on the front because he can't see the baby when it is in the "backpack" style carrier. We have twins and went to a housewarming for a friend. We live in New York, so we took the subway - each of us with one of our boys in the carrier on the front. When we arrived, I noticed a few women snickering about something, but thought nothing of it. Later, my friend told me they were commenting about how "stupid" my husband looked with the baby carrier, and they are only for women?? Personally, I find it cute - and it is the most convenient - and safest - way to transport our children on the subway. What do you think of men wearing a baby carrier?

I think it's totally fine.
Nothing wrong with a man wearing one.
Don't let them get to you.

I think the people at the party need to grow up. Men are just a nurturing as women. We are always pushed into roles of violence and disregard. A carrier is a great way to bond with the baby. Not only is it safe as you mentioned, its hands free living. Why is it both parents created the baby, but only one is allowed to care for him/her? I hope you won't continue to surround yourself with these negative neanderthals. Congrats on the twins also.

We got the Bjorn extra large, specifically for my husband. It would be more odd to me, if men didnt want to wear it.

I dont see what is stupid about it. I wouldnt ever think that if I saw a man with one on. I would think what a good dad for wanting to carry around his baby and have it so close to him!

I must say that is the one item my husband insisted on picking out. He thought the idea was great and could not wait to use it. I think they should do what they are comfortable with.
It is a great item and not gender specific.

If he is secure with it then no one else's opinion matters. It really is the safest way to transport your kids and that is what is important. I commend him for having the security in himself as a man and father to do what is right and not care about what others think. You got a great one there.

*shrug* No problem with it here myself. When I was 10-12 I used to carry my little sister around in one. I'd happily do it now, if I had kids of my own. Screw what other people think, what's important is that I'd be taking care of my child, and that alone is worth it to me.

I would think a man carrying his child would be cute. Some women are just retarded.

I think it is super cute. My husband wears one and loves it! He takes the baby out for walks nearly every day. Do your friends have kids or husbands that actually like to help in any way? It's not stupid, it's helpful.

A great father, but stupid friends.
May 29th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
I think the other women at the party must not be moms! My husband and I have 2 children, ages 9 and 5, and when I seem him now smiling and taking care of one of our nephews I think it is so cute! A man taking care of his child is a great thing….they don't know what they are talking about!

Yes, it does looks a little silly for a man to wear a carrier in the front. It has feminine connotations.
But good men look beyond that little problem and do it because its practical and because they love their family. You are beginning to see more men do that. After a while it will lose its feminine connotation.
I hope you realize you have a good man there.

Ignore them!! They are obviously out of touch with reality and I bet they are not maternal at all! My boyfriend takes our baby in the carrier and I think its lovely. No-ones ever laughed at him. Men like them because its more masculine than pushing a pram and they get to show off their pride n joy for all to see.
May 29th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
To each his own…but my hubby (and me) would probably never wear one.

I think its nice for a Dad to carry his baby, baby carrier or not its still nice and if they are facing each other it must help with bonding too

It doesn't surprise me at all.
There is such a bias against males in our society, that many women have this idea that all childbearing is for women only.
This is obvious in the behavior of many wives, who do things like panic and say "give him to me!" if a baby cries and the husband is trying to comfort the kid, etc. (I've seen this many times).
And it's even more obvious by how women ALWAYS try to get as much child custody as they can in divorce cases, even when the guy is a good father.
I applaud you for recognizing and accepting your husband taking on the role of father so enthusiastically.
Those women who laughed (and many other like them) see what your husband was doing, as being kinda "wimpy, less manly" (I've heard this before).
I think any involvement that a man gets into, as far as raising the children, should not be looked at as being less masculine, and that's exactly what a lot of WOMEN do to men; they emasculate them if they try to be attentive to their own children, or even worse, a lot of women will suspect the guy is a sexual pervert.
This happened to a relative of mine;
He took his young daughter (about 2 years old) to a restaurant for lunch. He's very affectionate with here, as he loves her very much. He does nothing that could be misconstrued as sexual or inappropriate in any way.
Guess what? Some women in the restaurant CALLED THE COPS ON HIM!
So the police show up, separate him from his daughter outside, and question him for 20 minutes, to determine if he was a child molester, for simply being affectionate with his daughter! They finally let him go.
Do you think this would happen with a woman?
Women, you need to start looking at men differently, like this woman who posted this question does.

I'm a man and I used a carrier to help out while traveling. BTW, I never noticed anyone snickering. I think you ran into a couple of old individuals who were the ones having the problem.
May 29th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
Babies have two parents: I see nothing wrong with either of them carrying his/her child in a baby carrier. What kind of idiots would have a problem with this? I'm especially surprised to hear that this happened in NYC, where it seems to me that you see this quite frequently. Were these women visiting from the boondocks or something?
Your husband is obviously a good and loving father. Pay no attention to morons.

"I noticed a few women snickering about something, but thought nothing of it. Later, my friend told me they were commenting about how "stupid" my husband looked with the baby carrier, and they are only for women??"
Those women were morons. No need to worry.
May 29th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
thats just crazy that anyone would comment about your husband wearing a baby carrier it's just another way to take your baby where you gotta go!! no different then a man pushing a stroller or carrying their babies in their arms.
May 29th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
what?….those women are "stupid"
your husband sounds like a great guy….those women only wish they had a man likes yours
my husband only once used the front carrier….and i too thought he looked like the greatest and cutest dad ever!….mind you he is Mexican macho type guy….but LOVES his baby girls

I work in an outdoor store and we sell baby carriers for walking ect, but there is a guy who is a regular almost every week, he has a 5 week daughter and him and his wife alternate between him with a baby carrier and her with the pushchair. I personally think its adorable, people are quick to assume that mothers have the attacthment thanks to Bowlby of course, but it's nice to see men having an intimate if you will role with their children. There are no real gender roles in parenting anymore and i wish more men would have the guts to use baby carriers. Just ignore the nasty comments ect they are most certainly not only for women.
Congratz on the twins btw

Why shouldn't men wear a baby carrier? It shows that they are taking an active role in being a parent. I would think that a father who carries his child in a carrier, or pushes them in a stroller is going to be more hands on with the child as opposed to when they make the mother do all of it. And especially with twins, what's a mother to do…carry one in the front and one in the back?
May 29th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
its an awesome idea. men should be involved in taking care of children too. I bet those women are just jealous because their husbands wont help out the way yours does!
May 29th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
I think it's wonderful and those women are stupid. The carrier is for anyone taking care of a baby!!!
May 29th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
i think they are the type have nannies for their babies instead of being a mom…
you have a good catch, be proud of him….
May 29th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
those women are just ridiculous. there hubbies probably dint do that stuff or they dont have kids. my man would because he is proud of his little boy. just because you dont see it all the time dont mean its not ok.
May 29th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
I think that many women get jealous when they see a good father stepping up to help with the kids. Because they didn't have that with their children, they snicker or make comments about it. This kind of stuff happens a lot with me and my husband over everything. I've received a lot of negativity from other women who believed it was their job alone to raise the kids. Celebrate good Dads everywhere, if anything other women should be supporting it. Unfortunately for some womern, it only raises their own baggage about their partners and raising their own children.
